I saw this piece at
a thrift store and debated buying it, because it didn't really
fit with the intentions of my collection, but in the end I couldn't resist the soft blue glaze and the pretty birds. What I learned
later, was that it had been painted by none other than my own mother-in-law, Betty Green, back when she had taken a ceramics class in
the 1980's. I was showing the piece to her and my father-in-law, in the spirit of sharing my treasures with fellow junkers, and it was
Art who said, "That looks like the one you painted for Clara." Betty agreed and said, "well if it was mine it would have
my initials on the bottom." We turned it over and voila - the initials "BG 1987" are etched into the bottom. We surmised that
Clara's son had donated the piece to the thrift shop after she (Clara) had passed away. It was... divine providence? Fate? Karma? ...
that I was the one who found and purchased it.
